When you look at a roof, you see shingles. That’s the part that gets all the attention — the color, the style, the brand. But underneath those shingles is a layer most homeowners have never thought about, and it’s doing more of the real waterproofing work than people realize. It’s called underlayment, and the quality of it, and whether it was installed correctly, has a lot to do with whether your roof keeps you dry over its full life. It’s also one of the easiest places for a corner-cutting contractor to save money in a way you’ll never see from the ground.
Since it’s invisible once the roof is done, underlayment is exactly the kind of thing you want to understand before the work happens, when you can still ask about it.

People assume shingles are the waterproofing, and they’re the primary defense, but they’re not a perfect seal. Shingles shed the vast majority of water, but wind-driven rain can push moisture up and under them, ice dams can force water backward, and in the gap between when an old roof comes off and a new one goes on, the deck is exposed. Underlayment is the backup that catches what gets past the shingles and protects the deck during and after installation. Think of shingles as the raincoat and underlayment as the waterproof layer sewn inside it. You hope the raincoat handles everything, but you’re grateful for the inner layer when the wind drives the rain sideways.
Underlayment does a few specific jobs. It provides a secondary water barrier against wind-driven rain and any water that gets past the shingles. It protects the roof deck from moisture during the installation, when the deck is temporarily exposed to the weather. It adds a layer of protection against the water backup that ice dams cause at the eaves. And a good synthetic underlayment gives the crew a safer, more stable surface to work on during installation.
For generations, underlayment meant felt — the black, tar-saturated paper often called “15-pound” or “30-pound” felt. It’s been the standard for a very long time, it’s inexpensive, and on a well-built roof it does its job. It’s still in wide use.
But felt has real weaknesses that matter in our climate. It’s heavy and tears fairly easily, especially in wind, and if a roof gets partially torn off and then rained on before the new shingles are down, felt can wrinkle, absorb water, and even rot. It also degrades over time and doesn’t hold up especially well to UV exposure if it’s left uncovered for long. On a steep roof, wet felt is slick and hazardous to work on.
Synthetic underlayment is the modern alternative, and it’s what we prefer for most work. It’s a woven or spun polymer material, much lighter than felt, dramatically stronger and more tear-resistant, and far more water-resistant. It doesn’t wrinkle or rot when it gets wet, it holds up much better to UV if it’s temporarily exposed, and it lies flatter and provides better footing for the crew. It costs more than felt, but not dramatically so, and the performance difference over the life of the roof is meaningful — especially on the steep, weather-exposed roofs common up here.
The upgrade from felt to synthetic is one of those places where spending a little more buys real, lasting value that you’ll never see but will benefit from every time the wind drives rain against your house.
There’s a third component worth knowing about, because it’s especially important in Western North Carolina, and that’s ice-and-water shield, sometimes called a peel-and-stick membrane. This is a specialized, self-adhering, fully waterproof membrane, and unlike standard underlayment, it bonds directly and permanently to the roof deck and seals around the nails that penetrate it.
Ice-and-water shield gets installed in the specific spots most vulnerable to water backup and pooling: along the eaves where ice dams form, in the valleys where two roof planes meet and water concentrates, and around penetrations and other critical details. Because it seals around fasteners and adheres completely to the deck, it provides genuinely waterproof protection in exactly the places where standard underlayment’s overlap-and-shed approach isn’t enough.
For our climate, ice-and-water shield at the eaves is not a luxury, it’s a real defense. We get enough cold, enough snow at elevation, and enough shaded, poorly ventilated roofs that ice dams are a genuine concern. When an ice dam forms, it backs water up under the shingle courses at the eave, and standard underlayment isn’t designed to stop water moving backward and pooling. Ice-and-water shield is. Skipping it to save money at the eaves is a false economy that can cost far more in interior damage when the first hard winter hits.
Because underlayment is completely hidden once the shingles are on, it’s one of the most tempting places for a low-bidding contractor to cut costs, and you’d never know from looking. A crew can use the cheapest felt instead of synthetic, skip the ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, or install the underlayment carelessly with insufficient overlap, and the roof will look identical to a properly built one on the day it’s finished. The difference only reveals itself years later, when a wind-driven storm or an ice dam finds the weakness.
This is exactly why it pays to understand what should be under your shingles before the work starts. When you’re getting quotes, ask what underlayment is included. Ask whether it’s synthetic or felt. Ask whether ice-and-water shield is being installed at the eaves and valleys, and how far up. A quality contractor will have clear answers and will have these components spelled out in the estimate. A vague answer, or an estimate that doesn’t mention underlayment at all, tells you something.
Underlayment doesn’t work in isolation — it’s part of a system of hidden components at the edges of your roof that all have to be right for the whole assembly to keep water out. Two worth knowing about are drip edge and starter strip.
Drip edge is a metal flashing installed along the eaves and rakes at the very edges of the roof. Its job is to direct water off the edge of the roof and into the gutter, rather than letting it wick backward under the roofing and rot the fascia and deck edge. It’s a small, inexpensive component, and it’s another one that a corner-cutting installer might skip or install incorrectly, with consequences that show up years later as edge rot. Proper drip edge, correctly integrated with the underlayment and ice-and-water shield, is part of any quality roof.
Starter strip is the first course of roofing installed at the eaves, before the visible shingles, and it seals down that critical bottom edge where wind wants to get underneath and lift the roofing. A properly installed starter course dramatically improves wind resistance at the eaves — which matters in our storms — and using actual starter product rather than improvising from cut shingles is a mark of a careful installation.
Neither of these is visible once the roof is done, which puts them in the same category as underlayment: easy to skimp on, invisible to the homeowner, and quietly important to how long your roof lasts and how well it holds up to weather. When you’re asking about underlayment, it’s worth asking about the edge details too.
Our climate leans hard on the parts of the roof that underlayment protects. With roughly 47 inches of rain a year, plenty of wind-driven storms, real snow and ice at elevation, and the strong UV that comes with mountain sun, the backup layer beneath the shingles gets called on more here than it would in a mild, dry climate. The steep pitches common on WNC homes also mean water and any wind-driven moisture move fast and hit the details hard.
All of that adds up to a simple principle: on a WNC roof, quality underlayment and proper ice-and-water shield aren’t the place to save a few dollars. They’re the difference between a roof that quietly protects you for its full life and one that develops mysterious leaks and premature deck damage that trace back to a hidden layer nobody thought to ask about.
