People who move to Western North Carolina from coastal areas sometimes assume they’ve left serious storm risk behind. They haven’t — they’ve just traded one kind of risk for another. While WNC doesn’t face direct hurricane landfalls, our mountains sit directly in the path of tropical remnants that push inland from the Gulf and Atlantic, sometimes still carrying sustained tropical storm-force winds by the time they reach Buncombe and Haywood counties. Add in the severe thunderstorm activity that peaks between May and September, the isolated tornado events that occur more frequently in our region than most residents realize, and the occasional derecho, and the picture becomes clear: storm preparedness here is not optional.
The good news is that preparation is largely a matter of maintenance and inspection. A roof that is in sound condition going into storm season is dramatically more likely to come through it intact. Here’s what that preparation actually involves.
The ideal window for storm-season preparation is late winter to early spring — before the severe weather pattern becomes active and while contractors are more available and weather conditions allow thorough inspections. An inspection at this time of year allows you to identify and address any issues that developed over the fall and winter before you’re heading into the highest-risk months.
The inspection should cover the shingle surface for any sections that have lifted, cracked, or separated; all flashing at chimneys, vents, valleys, and wall intersections; the condition of pipe boots and any penetration seals; the gutter system and its attachment to the fascia; the soffit and fascia for signs of moisture or deterioration; and the attic for any evidence of existing infiltration that may have occurred during winter storms.
If any of these areas show damage or wear, addressing them before storm season is substantially less expensive and stressful than dealing with them during or after an active weather event when contractor availability is compressed and emergency pricing applies.
A shingle that has lifted at its edge or that is secured by only one fastener is not going to survive a significant wind event. Wind damage to roofs follows a predictable pattern: it begins at the weakest point, typically the perimeter and ridge, and propagates from there. A single compromised shingle in the wrong location can allow wind to get beneath the adjacent shingles, peeling them back in sequence.
Standard architectural shingles are tested to wind resistance ratings that range from 90 to 130 miles per hour, depending on the product and installation method. But those ratings assume correct installation — the right number of fasteners, correct nailing location, proper exposure. Shingles that were installed with too few nails or with fasteners placed too high on the shingle panel are substantially more vulnerable than their rated wind resistance would suggest.
If your roof has areas where shingles are visibly lifting in calm conditions, that’s a repair that should happen before storm season without question.
Debris on a roof — leaves, small branches, pine needles, seed pods from the abundant tree species in WNC — holds moisture against the shingle surface and accelerates biological growth and shingle deterioration. Before storm season, this debris should be cleared from the roof surface, particularly from valleys, around penetrations, and in any low points where it tends to accumulate.
Gutters should be completely cleaned and checked for proper flow. A storm that overwhelms an already-clogged gutter will push water directly against the fascia and potentially back under the drip edge, adding interior moisture infiltration to whatever exterior damage the storm may cause. This is a compounding problem you can avoid entirely with a gutter cleaning before the season starts.
Also check that all downspouts are clear end-to-end and that the splash areas at the bottom direct water away from the foundation. In a storm event, properly functioning downspouts can be the difference between manageable runoff and a flooded crawlspace.
This is the preparation step that WNC homeowners most consistently underestimate. Our mountains are heavily forested, and many residential properties have large, mature trees in close proximity to the house. In calm weather, those trees are beautiful and provide welcome shade. In a storm with 60 or 70 mile per hour wind gusts, they become serious structural risks.
Before storm season, walk your property and honestly evaluate every tree within falling distance of your home. Look for deadwood — branches that have lost their leaves while the surrounding tree is healthy, or that have bark peeling away without new growth beneath. Look for visible decay at the base of trunks or at major branch unions. Look for trees that are leaning toward the house with root systems that appear shallow or disturbed. Any of these conditions warrants a professional arborist’s assessment.
The cost of having a hazardous tree removed or significantly pruned is modest compared to the cost of a tree through your roof — and unlike storm damage, a tree falling on your home from a tree you knew was unhealthy can create complications with insurance claims.
Before storm season is the right time to review your homeowner’s insurance policy — specifically the sections covering wind and hail damage, your deductible structure, and whether you have a separate wind or named-storm deductible. Some policies in North Carolina, particularly those issued more recently, carry percentage-based deductibles for wind damage that can be substantially higher than the flat dollar deductible for other losses.
Understanding your coverage before you need it allows you to make informed decisions about repairs and to enter any claims process knowing what to expect. If your policy documents are unclear, a conversation with your agent before storm season is time well spent.
If your roof does sustain damage in a storm, the actions you take in the first 24 to 48 hours can significantly affect your outcome. Document everything with photographs before any temporary repairs are made. Call your insurance company to open a claim promptly. Contact a local, licensed roofing contractor to inspect the damage and provide documentation — not a storm chaser who showed up uninvited.
If the damage has left any portion of the roof open to the elements, temporary tarping by a professional is appropriate to prevent interior damage from subsequent rain while the claim and repair process proceeds. Keep all documentation of emergency protective measures, as these costs are typically reimbursable under a valid claim.
The contractors who are available immediately after a major storm in WNC are not always the ones you would choose under calm conditions. Having a relationship with a local roofing company before a storm — knowing who you’d call and that they know your home — is itself a form of preparation.
